AFTERCARE DAY PROGRAMME

Providing support and stability to people recovering from addiction and alcoholism

Group Work/Therapy Sessions are held each day. These tackle various subjects/issues and will be themed.

Kairos Aftercare is 12 Step abstinence-based treatment programme which provides stability and support to Clients who have completed a primary treatment programme. We are open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 5pm. Clients arrive at 9.45am and finish by 4pm each day for 12 weeks.

We believe that providing some mid-week structure assists Clients in adjusting to daily life in the general community following the intensity of primary residential treatment. The Aftercare Programme is designed to meet the needs of each Client by integrating various methodologies and disciplines.

Treatment Goals

We aim to assist Clients in maintaining freedom from active addiction. We encourage Clients in their personal growth and change, and guide them towards useful and fulfilling lives. We provide support in choosing paths into education and new careers with particular focus on contributing to recovery groups and local communities. We believe that this approach guides clients away from crime thereby reducing reoffending rates.

Group Therapy

Each day begins with Group Therapy, which provides a safe space for Clients to share their feelings and gain support from one another. Many recovering addicts emerge from the isolation and pain of active addiction feeling overwhelmed and struggling with low self worth. In Group Therapy, Clients develop social skills and advance their self awareness through identification and through healthy interaction with peers.

Clients are encouraged to identify and connect with feelings and develop healthy coping strategies in order that they do not relapse.

Individual Counselling

Each Client is assigned a focal counsellor with whom they have weekly one-to-one counselling sessions.

As well as ongoing therapy, the counselling team provides support, advice and referrals to other professionals regarding health, debt, benefits and legal issues.

A six week report is provided to the care manager or other relevant professionals responsible for funding a Client and they are invited to visit for review half way through the 12 week programme. A final report is provided after graduation.

Workshops

Workshops are provided every day to educate and promote change in clients in areas including cross-addiction, anger, trauma, and grief.  To encourage connection with physicality and improve self-esteem, we also provide creative workshops in drama, music, dance, laughter therapy and meditation.

We regularly invite health professionals to educate Clients and discuss physical consequences and recovery. A nutritionist visits four times in every 12 week cycle and we can also provide opportunities for auricular acupuncture.

12 Step Fellowships

Once a week a Big Book Study is facilitated by one of our sessional workers and Clients are encouraged to read and discuss 12 Step literature and concepts. One 12 Step meeting per week is integrated into the programme and Clients are expected to attend two external 12 Step meetings per week.

Costs

The 2011 cost for 12 week Aftercare Programme is £250 per week. (Some care managers also secure funding for travel expenses for their clients. A weekly bus pass is currently £17.80.)
